Description
The Tesla Model S Plaid, introduced in 2021, marked the most dramatic evolution of Tesla’s pioneering luxury EV since the Model S debuted in 2012. Built to demonstrate that electric sedans could outperform the world’s top supercars while still carrying five passengers, the Plaid adopted a new tri-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain delivering well over 1,000 hp. Tesla claimed sub-2-second 0–60 mph launches (on prepared surfaces) and a potential 200-mph top speed with appropriate hardware — performance that reset expectations for production EVs.
Visually similar to the refreshed Model S, the Plaid introduced a redesigned interior with a landscape center screen, rear passenger display, improved materials, and the controversial “yoke” steering control (later complemented by a round wheel option). The car also featured upgraded thermal management, stronger brakes, and track-focused software, culminating in the Plaid Track Pack for sustained high-speed driving.
Named after the “Plaid” hyperspeed joke from Spaceballs, the car symbolized Tesla’s competitive statement to legacy performance brands. It helped cement the idea that electric power could be not just efficient, but exhilarating — influencing competitors from Porsche, Mercedes-AMG, and Lucid. Today, the Model S Plaid stands as a milestone in EV performance, blending everyday usability with record-shattering acceleration and signaling the next chapter of high-performance motoring.
