Description

The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Competizione, developed between 1971 and 1973, was the factory-sanctioned competition version of the 365 GTB/4 “Daytona.” Although Ferrari originally focused on prototypes for endurance racing, private teams pushed for a GT-class version of the Daytona, prompting the factory and Scuderia partner Chinetti/NART to create a limited number of lightweight, competition-prepared cars. A total of 15 Competizione examples were built in three series, each incorporating progressive improvements.

These cars retained the Daytona’s front-mounted 4.4-liter V12, but were tuned with higher compression, upgraded carburetors, revised exhaust systems, and enhanced cooling. Extensive weight reduction came from alloy body panels, plexiglass windows, stripped interiors, and modified chassis bracing. Wider wheels, flared arches, roll cages, and racing brakes transformed the Daytona into a durable endurance machine.

On track, the 365 GTB/4 Competizione gained an unexpected — and legendary — reputation. Competing against newer mid-engine rivals, it delivered remarkable results at the world’s toughest races. Highlights include multiple class wins and podiums at Le Mans (1972, 1973, and 1974), victories at Daytona and Sebring, and strong showings in long-distance GT championships. Its resilience, speed, and longevity earned it the nickname:
“The last great front-engine Ferrari GT racer.”

Today, the 365 GTB/4 Competizione stands as one of Ferrari’s most celebrated customer race cars — rare, brutally powerful, and historically important — bridging Ferrari’s classic GT racing heritage with the modern era.
