Description

The Ferrari F40 LM (Le Mans) was a factory-supported, race-prepared version of the F40 developed in partnership with Michelotto in the late 1980s and early 1990s. While the roadgoing F40 was already conceived with motorsport in mind, the LM transformed it into a dedicated competition machine built to take on Group B/IMSA and later GT endurance racing. Only a very small number — roughly 19 cars in total (depending on classification) were converted or built to LM/Competizione specification, making it one of the rarest Ferrari racers of the modern era.

Compared to the standard F40, the LM received dramatic upgrades: a strengthened chassis, revised suspension, massive brakes, racing aerodynamics, and extensive weight-reduction. Its twin-turbo 2.9-liter V8 was heavily tuned — producing anywhere from 700 to over 800 horsepower, depending on series regulations and setup. A sequential-style racing gearbox, competition electronics, and FIA-spec safety equipment completed the transformation.

The F40 LM made its competition debut at Le Mans in 1989 with the French team Pilot-Aldix. Though often up against purpose-built prototypes and later GT rivals like the McLaren F1 GTR, the F40 LM proved brutally fast and respected for its raw character. Later evolutions — sometimes referred to as F40 GTE or Competizione — continued racing into the mid-1990s, earning class podiums and becoming fan favorites for their ferocity and unmistakable presence.

Today, the Ferrari F40 LM is celebrated as the ultimate expression of the F40’s race-bred soul — uncompromised, analog, loud, and visceral. It stands as a bridge between Ferrari’s classic turbocharged experimentation and the sophisticated GT programs that followed, cementing its status as one of the most iconic competition Ferraris ever built.
