Description

The Volkswagen SP2, also known as the Type 2 Karmann Ghia SP2, was a sports car produced by Volkswagen do Brasil from 1972 to 1976. It was designed specifically for the Brazilian market and is considered one of the rarest and most unique Volkswagen models.

The SP2 was introduced in 1972 as a two-seater sports coupe based on the Volkswagen Type 2 (VW Variant) platform. It was designed by Brazilian designer Marcio Piancastelli and featured a sleek and modern design with a fastback roofline, distinctive sloping nose, and unique body details such as a wide grille, bold rear fenders, and large bumpers. The SP2 was intended to be a sporty and luxurious car, targeting the growing Brazilian middle class market.

Under the hood, the SP2 was powered by a rear-mounted 1.7-liter flat-four air-cooled engine, which produced 75 horsepower and was mated to a four-speed manual transmission. It featured independent rear suspension, front disc brakes, and rear drum brakes for improved handling and braking performance.

The interior of the SP2 featured a minimalist design with bucket seats, a three-spoke steering wheel, and a simple instrument panel. It was well-appointed with features such as a woodgrain dashboard, carpeted floors, and luxurious trim details. The SP2 also had several unique features, such as a ventilation system that used air from the engine compartment and a rear window that could be opened for improved airflow.

Despite its unique design and features, the SP2 faced challenges in the Brazilian market. It was relatively expensive compared to other Volkswagen models, and its performance was not as impressive as some of the competing sports cars at the time. As a result, the SP2 had limited sales success and production ceased in 1976, with a total of only around 10,000 units produced during its production run.

Today, the Volkswagen SP2 is considered a rare and collectible classic car, particularly in Brazil where it is highly regarded for its unique design and limited production numbers. It is often sought after by Volkswagen enthusiasts and collectors for its distinctive styling, historical significance as a Brazilian-made Volkswagen model, and its place in the Volkswagen family tree as a unique and rare sports car.
