Description

The Volkswagen Sunagon is a lesser-known variant of the popular Volkswagen Type 2, also known as the VW Bus or VW Transporter. The Sunagon was a limited edition model produced by Volkswagen in the late 1970s, specifically for the North American market.

The Sunagon was essentially a special edition of the Type 2 Westfalia camper van, which was already known for its distinctive design and practicality. The Sunagon was equipped with a pop-top roof that provided additional headroom and sleeping space, making it an ideal choice for camping and outdoor adventures.

The Sunagon featured a number of unique design elements compared to the standard Type 2 Westfalia. It had a two-tone paint scheme with contrasting colors on the upper and lower body, as well as special Sunagon decals and badging. The interior of the Sunagon was also specially designed for camping, with a kitchenette, dining area, and sleeping accommodations.

The Sunagon was powered by a rear-mounted air-cooled engine, similar to other Type 2 models. It had a four-cylinder engine with various displacement options, ranging from 1.6 to 2.0 liters, and output varied depending on the year and specific model. It had rear-wheel drive and independent suspension, which were common features of Volkswagen Type 2 models.

Production of the Sunagon was limited, and it was only available for a few years in the late 1970s. As a result, the Sunagon is relatively rare and sought-after among Volkswagen enthusiasts and collectors. Its unique design, practicality, and limited production run make it a distinctive and memorable part of Volkswagen’s history. Today, the Sunagon is considered a classic and is highly valued by collectors who appreciate its unique blend of style and functionality as a VW camper van.
