Description
The Porsche Cayman S debuted in 2005 (987 generation) as the performance flagship of Porsche’s new mid-engine coupe lineup, positioned between the Boxster and the 911. Built on the Boxster platform but with a stiffer fixed roof and chassis tuning focused on precision handling, the Cayman S launched with a 3.4-liter flat-six and quickly gained a reputation for exceptional balance and driver involvement.
Through successive generations — 987, 981, and the 718 Cayman era — the S variant evolved with stronger brakes, upgraded suspensions, and increasingly powerful engines. The notable shift came in 2016 when Porsche introduced turbocharged four-cylinders for the 718 Cayman S, trading traditional naturally aspirated character for more torque and efficiency. Enthusiasts debated the change, but performance numbers improved significantly.
Over time, the Cayman S has become a key expression of Porsche’s philosophy: compact, precise, and engineered for pure driving dynamics. While always positioned below the 911 in the lineup, many drivers consider the Cayman S one of Porsche’s most rewarding modern sports cars thanks to its mid-engine balance, track-ready capability, and everyday usability.
