Description

The Jaguar Mk1, officially called the “Jaguar 2.4 Litre Saloon,” debuted in 1955 as Jaguar’s first compact postwar sedan. Positioned beneath the larger MkVII and XK luxury models, it was designed to bring Jaguar refinement and performance to a broader market. Built on a modern unitary (monocoque) body, the Mk1 featured sleek lines, a spacious interior, and the brand’s signature blend of sportiness and luxury.

Initially powered by a 2.4-liter version of Jaguar’s renowned XK inline-six, the car emphasized comfort and handling more than outright speed. That changed in 1957 with the introduction of the 3.4-liter variant, which transformed the Mk1 into a formidable performance sedan. With upgraded brakes and suspension, the 3.4 quickly proved dominant in saloon-car racing — driven by notable figures such as Mike Hawthorn — and helped cement Jaguar’s reputation for racing-inspired road cars.

Despite its innovations, the Mk1 had quirks, including a relatively narrow rear track that affected handling. Continuous refinements paved the way for its successor, the Jaguar Mk2 in 1959, which addressed those shortcomings while expanding power and luxury.

Today, the Jaguar Mk1 is remembered as a pivotal model: the car that launched Jaguar’s lineage of fast, elegant sports saloons — a formula that would define the brand for decades.
