Description
The Volkswagen Type 181, also known as “The Thing,” was a two-door, four-seater convertible that was produced from 1968 to 1983. The car was based on the Beetle platform and was designed to be a versatile, off-road-capable vehicle for the German military. It was eventually sold to the public and became popular as a fun, beach-going vehicle. The car featured a boxy, utilitarian design, a soft top that could be completely removed, and was powered by a 1.6-liter, air-cooled engine. Despite being produced for 15 years, relatively few were sold in the United States, where it was known as “The Thing.”
